This initiative which aims to help brilliant students for doing doctorate research in India, has got a great upgrade in Budget 2025. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman stated that 10,000 additional fellowships will be given over the next five years. The PMRF initiative has recently been expanded to cover eligible students from all accredited Indian institutes and universities. Additionally, students doing MTech at AICTE-approved and centrally supported technical institutes (CFTIs) earn a monthly stipend of Rs 12,400.

Objective of PM Research Fellowship Scheme
The primary objective of the PM Research Fellowship scheme is to provide financial assistance to the students who clear the exam and are deserving to receive the award. This fellowship scheme will provide the research students with monthly financial assistance to keep them motivated throughout the course. The Indian government provides an attractive fellowship program known as the Prime Minister’s Research Fellowship (PMRF). This initiative intends to financially assist and inspire students seeking Ph.D. degrees in science and technology. The selected students are also eligible for a research award of INR 2 lakh per year (a total sum of INR 10 lakh).

Eligibility Direct Entry
- Applicants must have a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or dual degree in Science and Technology from IISc/IITs/NITs/IISERs/IIEST with a CGPA/CPI of 8.0 or higher on a 10-point scale.
- Alternatively, they can have a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or dual degree in Science and Technology from any other recognized Indian university/institution with a CGPA of 8.0 or higher.
- Students must have qualified GATE and be pursuing or have finished an M.Tech./M.S. degree by research at one of the PMRF Granting Institutes with a minimum CGPA or CPI of 8.0 (on a 10-point scale).
Eligibility Lateral Entry
- Students must be working toward a PhD at one of the PMRF-granting universities.
- Students who entered the PhD curriculum with a master’s degree should have completed at least 12 months of the PhD program.
- Students who entered the PhD program with a bachelor’s degree should have completed no more than 24 months of the program.
- They must have completed at least four courses in the PhD program (each of which should be a full-semester course) with a CGPA of 8.5 or above on a scale of ten.
- An applicant may be considered for the fellowship only twice through a lateral entrance channel.
Financial Benefits
Financial benefits of the PMRF are:
- Year One: Rs. 70,000.
- Year Two: Rs. 70,000.
- Year 3: Rs. 75,000.
- Year 4: Rs. 80,000.
- Year 5: Rs. 80,000.

The selection will be conducted through two channels: Direct Entry Channel and Lateral Entry Channel. Under the direct admission channel, the granting institution to which the candidate has been admitted would strongly propose candidates based on their merit.
